  • 3,000+co-op programmes at Canadian universities that alternate study terms with paid work terms

What Canada offers

  • Quality and research

Each province quality-assures its universities and colleges, and Canadian degrees are recognised worldwide. Research universities welcome international students into labs, projects and graduate programmes.

  • Applied learning and co-op

Many degrees and diplomas include co-op terms, internships or practicums. Since 1 April 2026 eligible post-secondary students no longer need a separate co-op work permit for a placement their programme requires.

  • Several ways in

Apply directly to a university, start with a foundation year or Year One at a pathway college, or choose a career-focused college or polytechnic programme. This guide explains each route.

  • Support and community

Universities run international student offices, academic support and orientation, and Canada is one of the most multicultural countries in the world, with communities from every region.

  • English and French

Canada is officially bilingual. All the institutions in this guide teach in English; French and bilingual programmes exist across the country and are an advantage in many careers.

  • Cities and provinces

Study by the Pacific in British Columbia, near the Rockies in Alberta, on the Prairies in Manitoba or in Ontario’s large university cities. Living costs and climate differ a lot between them.

  • Work while you study

Eligible full-time students may work up to 24 hours a week off campus during term and full time in scheduled breaks. English-only and pathway-only study does not allow off-campus work.

  • Experience after graduation

Graduates of eligible programmes can apply for a post-graduation work permit of up to three years. It depends on the programme, a language test and other conditions, and it is never guaranteed.
