Why Canada

Why Study in Canada?

Four reasons students and families choose a Canadian education — each one backed by official sources, not slogans.

Internationally recognised qualifications

Canadian college and university degrees are recognised worldwide. Education is run by each province and territory, each with its own established quality-assurance system for universities and colleges.

Universities and colleges, diverse programmes

97 Universities Canada member universities and around 130 public colleges, institutes and polytechnics offer Bachelor's, Master's and doctoral degrees, diplomas and post-graduate certificates — and four Canadian universities rank in the QS World Top 100 for 2027.

Practical learning and co-op opportunities

Hands-on learning is built into college programmes, and Canadian universities offer more than 3,000 co-op programmes that alternate study terms with paid work terms in your field — on selected programmes and subject to eligibility.

Study in English or French

Most institutions teach in English or French, and bilingual universities let you learn in both official languages — in one of the world's most multicultural study environments.

University Pathways

Foundation and International Year One programmes can provide an alternative route into selected universities when progression requirements are met.

Career-focused

College Diplomas

Practical programmes at public colleges, institutes and polytechnics, usually one to three years. Recognition, transfer options and post-study work eligibility vary by programme.

Postgraduate study

Graduate Certificates

Career-focused postgraduate programmes at selected institutions for students who already hold a degree or equivalent qualification, usually about one year.

Language preparation

English & French

Academic language preparation for students who need additional English or French proficiency before beginning their main programme.

Also available: PhD and research degrees of typically three to five years, with funding considered separately by each university. Entry requirements and English or French language scores are set by each institution and programme.

Plan Your Start

Intakes, Scholarships and Working While Studying.

The practical side of planning a Canadian degree — in plain language, from official sources.

Intakes

When Can You Start?

September is Canada's main university intake. Selected institutions also offer January starts, and some colleges and pathway programmes have May intakes.

Not every programme is available at every intake, so we recommend planning nine to twelve months ahead.

Scholarships

Scholarships & Awards

International students may qualify for entrance awards, academic merit scholarships and institution-specific funding.

Eligibility and award values vary by university and programme, and nobody can guarantee a scholarship. Verified examples for 2026/27 and 2027/28:

Laurier entrance scholarships · CAD 5,000–6,000 a yearUBC International Major Entrance Scholarship · CAD 10,000–25,000 a yearTMU International Student Leadership Award · CAD 10,000

Working while studying

Work During Your Studies

Eligible full-time students at a designated learning institution may generally work up to 24 hours a week off campus during regular school terms, and full-time during scheduled breaks.

Eligibility depends on your programme and the conditions on your study permit; language-only and preparatory courses do not qualify.

Scholarship values as published by each institution in October 2026. Work rules: Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (canada.ca), updated April 2026, checked 11 October 2026. Your study permit conditions, not this page, are final.

Before You Apply

Canadian Study-Permit Essentials

Canada's rules differ from Australia's and the UK's, and they have changed several times since 2024. Four things every applicant should understand, from the official sources.

DLI

Designated Learning Institutions

Your study permit application needs a letter of acceptance from a designated learning institution (DLI) — a school approved by its province or territory to host international students. DLI status alone does not make a programme eligible for a post-graduation work permit, so we check both the institution and the programme before you apply.

PAL / TAL

Provincial or territorial attestation letter

Most undergraduate and college applicants need a provincial or territorial attestation letter, issued through the institution after you accept your offer and usually pay a deposit. From 1 January 2026, master's and doctoral students at public institutions are exempt. Quebec uses its own Certificat d'acceptation du Québec (CAQ) instead.

Proof of funds

Financial requirement

For applications made on or after 1 September 2026, a single applicant outside Quebec must show CAD 23,448 for living costs for the first year, in addition to tuition and travel; the amount rises with each accompanying family member, and Quebec sets its own figures. You must show these funds without relying on work in Canada.

PGWP

Post-Graduation Work Permit eligibility

Only programmes listed as PGWP-eligible on IRCC's DLI list qualify. Bachelor's, master's and doctoral graduates have no field-of-study condition; college certificate and diploma graduates must study in an eligible field, and all applicants need a language test (CLB 7 for university programmes, CLB 5 for college programmes). Programmes delivered by private career colleges, including public–private partnership programmes, are generally not eligible. We confirm the published position for each programme — it is information, not a guarantee.

Questions, Answered

Planning Your Studies in Canada.

Practical answers to the questions students and parents ask us most. Something else on your mind? Ask us in your free consultation.

What are the requirements to study in Canada?

You need a letter of acceptance from a designated learning institution, a study permit for any programme longer than six months, proof of funds (CAD 23,448 a year for living costs outside Quebec for applications from 1 September 2026, plus tuition and travel) and, for most undergraduate and college applicants, a provincial or territorial attestation letter issued through the institution; Quebec uses the CAQ. Academic and language requirements are set by each institution and programme: typically a completed secondary education with minimum averages for Bachelor's entry and IELTS of around 6.0–6.5 for direct entry, while pathway programmes accept lower scores.

How long does a Bachelor's or Master's degree take?

Bachelor's degrees take three to four years — four for an Honours degree, with three-year general degrees at some universities and in Quebec after CEGEP. Master's degrees take one to two years, course-based or with a thesis, and PhDs typically three to five. Foundation programmes add two terms before you join first year, while International Year One replaces first year and leads into Year 2 when the progression requirements are met.

What is the difference between a Canadian university and a college?

Universities award Bachelor's, Master's and doctoral degrees and carry out research. Public colleges, institutes and polytechnics focus on practical, career-oriented certificates, diplomas and post-graduate certificates of one to three years, and some also award applied degrees. Pathway colleges are a third category: they teach foundation and first-year programmes that progress to a partner university when the requirements are met. Recognition, transfer credit and post-study work eligibility are decided programme by programme, so we check each option with you.

Can international students work while studying?

Usually yes, within the conditions of the study permit. Eligible full-time students at a designated learning institution can work up to 24 hours a week off campus during regular terms and unlimited hours during scheduled breaks, once the programme has started and with a social insurance number; on-campus work has no hour limit. Students enrolled only in English or French language courses, general-interest courses or courses required for admission to a full-time programme cannot work off campus. Proof of funds must show you can study without working, so part-time work should be seen as experience, not a way to finance your education.

When do Canadian universities start classes?

September (Fall) is the main intake. January (Winter) starts exist at selected institutions and programmes, and May (Summer) at some colleges and pathway programmes — many universities admit first-year students in September only, and pathway colleges typically offer January, May and September starts. Application deadlines for September entry often fall between December and March, so start planning nine to twelve months ahead.

How much does it cost to study in Canada?

Tuition is set by each institution. Statistics Canada's averages for 2026/27 are CAD 42,062 a year for international undergraduates and CAD 24,693 for international graduate students, and EduCanada quotes roughly CAD 16,000–25,000 a year for college diploma programmes. Budget living costs separately — Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada requires proof of CAD 23,448 a year outside Quebec — plus health insurance and travel. We help you build a realistic budget before you apply.

Are scholarships available for international students?

Yes. Most Canadian universities offer entrance scholarships and international student awards, often considered automatically on admission — for example Wilfrid Laurier University's renewable entrance scholarships of CAD 5,000–6,000 a year for international students entering in September 2027 (no application), UBC's International Major Entrance Scholarship of CAD 10,000–25,000 a year (2026/27, automatic on admission) and Toronto Metropolitan University's CAD 10,000 International Student Leadership Award for Fall 2027 (by application). Government of Canada scholarship programmes for international students are limited to specific regions, so institutional awards are the realistic route for most students. Values and criteria are set by each institution and change yearly; we check the current options for your profile, and nobody can guarantee a scholarship.

Can MultiPath help with direct university applications and pathway programmes?

Yes, both. We hold agency agreements with Canadian universities such as UBC Okanagan and Kwantlen Polytechnic University, with the six Navitas pathway colleges in Canada, with the University of Toronto's International Foundation Program and with University Canada West, and we support direct applications to other universities and colleges. Where a university is reached through a pathway college, our agreement is with the college; admission and progression decisions are always made by the institution.

What are a DLI and PGWP eligibility, and does MultiPath give immigration advice?

A designated learning institution (DLI) is a school approved by its province or territory to host international students; you need a DLI letter of acceptance to apply for a study permit. The Post-Graduation Work Permit is a separate, programme-level question: only programmes listed as PGWP-eligible on IRCC's DLI list qualify, degree graduates have no field-of-study condition, college graduates must study in an eligible field, and programmes delivered through public–private partnerships generally do not qualify. MultiPath Expert explains the published rules and helps with institutional documents; we are not licensed Canadian immigration consultants and refer regulated immigration advice to licensed professionals.
