A Canadian master’s usually takes one to two years after a bachelor’s. Through MultiPath you can apply for course-based professional master’s in engineering, data analytics and business, either directly or after a short graduate pathway.
Course-based or thesis-based
Most international students choose a course-based (professional) master’s: taught courses, often a capstone project and sometimes a co-op or internship term, finished in about 12 to 16 months. A thesis-based master’s is a research degree: you need a supervisor who accepts you, and it usually takes two years. The master’s routes in this guide are course-based.
Direct entry or a graduate pathway
With the required degree, grades and English score you can start the master’s directly. If you are slightly below the English level or are missing prerequisite courses, a master’s qualifying pathway or advanced graduate pathway adds one or two terms before the master’s; you start the master’s only when you pass them. A graduate certificate or post-graduate diploma is a different, shorter college qualification: it is not a master’s degree.

What a master’s means for work and family
- Attestation letter: not needed for a master’s at a public university for study permit applications made since 1 January 2026. Master’s at private universities still need one.
- Work after graduation: after an eligible master’s of at least 8 months you can apply for a post-graduation work permit of up to 3 years, with a language test at CLB 7. There is no field-of-study condition for master’s graduates.
- Spouse or partner: an open work permit for your spouse is possible only if your master’s lasts 16 months or longer. Many one-year master’s do not qualify; a 16-month programme with co-op may.
- Time abroad and online study: time studied outside Canada is deducted from the work permit, and no more than half of the programme may be online.
