Most funding for international students in Canada comes from the universities themselves: entrance scholarships considered with your application, and awards for continuing students. Government scholarships for full degrees are rare. Here is what is realistically open to you.
How scholarships work in Canada
- Entrance scholarships are usually given with the offer, often automatically on your admission average; some need a separate application with an earlier deadline.
- Renewable awards continue only if you keep the stated grade average and a full course load each year.
- Scholarships normally reduce your tuition: you still pay the rest, and the study permit needs proof of the full first-year costs.
- Awards are limited and competitive. Nobody can promise a scholarship; the award letter states your amount and its conditions.
- Pathway colleges and some partner universities have their own awards for pathway students, with intake dates and conditions shown in each profile.
