Short answers to the questions parents and students ask us most often. For anything else, message us: the details are at the end of this guide.
Do I need IELTS?
For a degree you need about IELTS 6.0–6.5 (or an accepted alternative such as PTE Academic, LanguageCert or the provider’s own test). For a foundation or International Year One below degree level you usually need a UKVI-approved Secure English Language Test (such as IELTS for UKVI), typically 5.0–5.5. Many institutions accept other tests or a pre-sessional course instead.
I finished 11 years of school. Can I go to a UK university?
Yes. The International Foundation Year is designed for you: pass it with the required grades and you enter year 1 of the degree at the partner university.
Can I start a master’s straight away?
If you hold a bachelor’s degree with the required grade and English, yes: see the direct-entry master’s options in this guide. If your grade, subject or English is lower, a 1–3 term pre-master’s leads into the same master’s.
How long does the visa take?
Usually about 3 weeks from outside the UK once you have given your biometrics. You can apply up to 6 months before the course starts; we recommend applying as soon as your CAS is issued.
Can I work?
On a degree-level course at a university or its pathway college you can usually work up to 20 hours a week in term time and full time in vacations. Below degree level the limit is lower. Your visa states your conditions.
Can I stay after I graduate?
The Graduate visa lets you stay to work or look for work: 2 years if you apply by 31 December 2026, 18 months if you apply from 1 January 2027, and 3 years after a PhD. You apply from inside the UK before your Student visa expires.
Can my family come with me?
Only if you are a postgraduate research (PhD-level) student or sponsored by your government. Students on bachelor’s, pathway or taught master’s courses cannot bring dependants.
When are the intakes?
September is the main intake. Many pathway programmes and some master’s degrees also start in January, and some colleges have April, May or June starts.
