Master’s options in Australia

Chapter 4 of 10 Last published 26 October 2026 Facts verified 25 October 2026

An Australian master’s by coursework takes one to two years after a bachelor’s and is taught through units, projects and often an industry placement. Through MultiPath you can apply directly to master’s degrees at universities across Australia, with tuition, length, entry and English shown for each.

How long is a master’s?

The Australian Qualifications Framework sets the length by your previous study: usually two years after a three-year bachelor’s in a different field, one and a half years after a bachelor’s in the same field, and one year after an honours degree or graduate diploma in the field. Many universities offer two-year versions for everyone; the shorter versions give credit for your earlier study.

Direct entry, or a pathway first

  • Direct-entry master’s

With a recognised bachelor’s, the required grades and the English score, you start the master’s directly. Most master’s ask for IELTS 6.5 with no band below 6.0.

  • Graduate certificate first

A six-month graduate certificate can be a first step and usually counts towards the related master’s. It is a separate, shorter qualification, not a master’s degree.

  • Postgraduate pathway

If your grades or background do not meet direct entry, a postgraduate qualifying or pre-master’s programme at the university’s college prepares you; you start the master’s when you pass it.

  • English packaged with the master’s

If your English is slightly below the requirement, an English course packaged with the master’s can replace the test, with one student visa for both.

A master’s, the graduate visa and family

  • Graduate visa: after a coursework master’s you may be able to apply for the Temporary Graduate visa for up to two years, if your study adds up to at least two academic years (92 weeks) completed in at least 16 months in Australia. A master’s of one or one and a half years alone may not be enough: we check each course.
  • Partners and children: since 2 October 2026 a student visa for a coursework master’s can include a partner or children only in a few cases, for example with a foreign government scholarship that fully funds your studies.
  • Work while you study: up to 48 hours a fortnight in session and unlimited hours in breaks.
